In our cities, for these dates christmas and the start of a new year, it unfolds a scene moving: public servants, businessmen, and citizens of delivering gifts and to help the children in street situation. These acts, though full of good intentions, are merely palliative in front of a social reality more complex and profound: the inequality and poverty that affect our society.
The presence of children begging at traffic signals is a reminder of our failure as a society, at least to address this problem so important and añejo. These children should have a safe home and educational opportunities, not of the uncertainty and insecurity of the streets. Here, the responsibility lies not only in the children's parents or the government, which, by the way, yes you should use our taxes to prioritize solutions around this problem. But before the government's inability to fix it we must take this situation in our hands to fix it, once and for all.
Entrepreneurs play a crucial role in this social dynamic. While our contribution through the payment of taxes, donations, and community support is important, and our greater social impact is the creation of decent jobs; we must recognize that, although important, this has not been enough, and we would be crazy to think that the problem is going to solve only without doing anything different.
In Mexico, and in other parts of the world, the existence of large economic and social gaps is already unsustainable. The contrast between extreme wealth and poverty visible in the streets is a reflection of inequalities deep that should be addressed. High inequality, as evidenced by the children in the streets, it is the breeding ground for social unrest and the inclination towards political alternatives as the one we are, populism disguised as socialism.
The call is to us, to entrepreneurs, to acknowledge the need to go beyond the generation of employment and we get involved actively in initiatives that address the root causes of inequality and poverty. This involves making use of our leadership to rally other sectors of society, including the government and civil society organizations, to develop real solutions.
As a society, to all, we have to avoid romanticizing poverty. Instead, we must work together to create a system that will allow each child to grow in a safe environment and with equal opportunities. The real social transformation is going to require an effort, where all to make.
