Muleteers We are and in the Way we Walk

30 Oct 2023

“Arrieros we are and in the way we walk” is one of my favorite sayings. Me in a number of decisions to personal or business I have to take, day after day. I often wonder if we all interpret in the same way this metaphor. For me, it is a profound reflection on the journey of life.

The saying alludes to the muleteers, those who formerly were responsible for transporting goods. The way you walked was filled with obstacles, and uncertainties, and challenges. However, despite this, the troops remained, adapting to the circumstances and in the face of every adversity with resilience and, above all, with help.

The road that we travel daily is similar to that of those wranglers. Even though we sometimes feel overwhelmed by the daily challenges, in reality, it is a journey that is much more widespread than what we see. Some of us touch the lead, others follow; some advance in solitary, while others are accompanied. Some go to the front and the other behind. For some it is their first expedition; others are muleteers experienced. But all, without exception, they must face challenges in this journey. Challenges that sometimes are overcome with success and others do not. That, whether we like it or not, is the essence of life.

The relevance of this lies in recognizing that we are all on a journey. Although each one has its own path, full of duels, only to arrive at the end of our journey with the help of other carriers. It is crucial to understand that this journey is cyclical; inevitably, we find ourselves with others, whether in times of trouble or joy. Such recognition should be encouraged to offer help when it is in our hands and receive it when you need it. Because, at the end of the day, the crossing of our paths is not mere coincidence; it is a reminder that, on this journey, the cooperation and mutual support are not only valuable, but essential. For this reason, to sit with another muleteer, whether known or not, keep in mind that the help you give today can be the bridge that you need tomorrow. Our cross is to be horses and we like it or not, we are all in this way. And, sooner or later, at some corner or at the crossroads, our paths would intertwine again. It is preferable that, when that happens, we recognize ourselves as allies and not as strangers.

Regardless of whether it's about relations personal, professional, economic or family, it is the duty of good horsemen to remember that we are all on this journey together. Recognize that “arrieros somos” is to identify the humanity in the other, to understand that we all face battles and challenges, and respect and understanding are crucial to build instead of erecting barriers.

Then, “arrieros we are and in the way we walk” is more than a simple saying. It is a philosophy of life, a call to the resilience, understanding, and the union in this journey shared. Whether you're an entrepreneur, an entrepreneur, or simply a human being, it is a teaching that we should not ignore it.
